Durga Puja 2016 Rituals, Kolkata Siliguri, Due to the compassion, kindness and expression of affection of Maa Durga, it becomes easier for devotees to get blessing from Maa Durga. She never wants to see her devotees in any trouble. Kind hearted Maa Shakti’s blessing which does not require the assistance of another seeker. Devotes becomes omnipotent once he/she are blessed by Maa Durga. During Durga Puja, the enchanting festivities reach their peak, with huge and highly decorated pandals (makeshift tents) and lightings ornamented with impressive idols of Goddess Durga, huge community gathering, feasts etc.


Durga Puja starts with Mahalaya, the first day of Aswin month and continues till ninth day. Thousands of devotees offer prayers to their ancestors at the holy river banks, the ritual called Tarpan. Navratri Puja is done in each and every Durga Puja Pandal. The Navratri Puja is performed for nine days starting from Ghatasthapna, the day after Mahalaya.  Ghatasthapana, also known as Kalasthapana is performed on the first day of Navaratri. Ghatasthapana involves invoking Goddess Shakti in Kalash Pot and symbolically on the growing shoots of grains. During, last six days the Durga Puja is celebrated in Pandals and whole city is decorated like a bride. These six days are named as, Maha Sasthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Asthami, Maha Nawami and Vijaya Dashmi.

Maha Sasthi

It is believed listening to the plaintive call of her devotees; Goddess Durga arrives to the mortal world from her heavenly abade along with her children. On this day, Traditional dhak beats are played to welcome Maa Durga. On this day the well decorated goddess durga idols are setup in the durga puja pandals and the ritualistic opening ceremony of the idol is performed by calling special guests followed by important rituals, such as Bondhon, Amontron and Adhibas are carried out. Henceforth, the main festivity of Durga Puja begins.

Maha Saptami

Maha Saptami, the seventh navratri night also called as Kola Bow or Nabapatrika is given a pre-dawn bath, the ancient rituals of worshiping nine types of plants. These plants are worshipped together as a symbol of the goddess.

Maha Astami

One this day you can hear a rectile of Sanskrit hymns in the puja pandals community followed by the anajali offering to the goddess by thousands of devotees.On this day one of the famous ritual is performed called “Kumari Puja”. Little girls in the form of goddess with a very special ritual are worshipped in a number of puja pandals and even at many houses who worship goddess and perform navratri with full rituals.  As the day wore on, it was time for the important Sandhi Puja, which marks the inter-linking of the Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami.

Maha Navami

This is the last day of Durga Puja. On this day the navami puja is performed with special Maha Navami Bhog to Maa Durga and later it is distributed among the devotees.

Dashami

Dashami is the farewell day of Maa Durga. The devotees offer a tearful farewell to the Goddess. On this day the devotees and organizers carries Goddess Durga idol in processions around the locality and dinally immerse the Goddess idol in a nearby holy river or lake. Vijaya Dashami is an event celebrated the entire world in different ways. Vijaya Dashami is also a day when lord Rama got victors over Lanka after killing Ravana.
