Countdown begins for the worship, celebration and the biggest festival of West Bengal. On the occasion of the Mahalaya on Monday, this grand festival of Bengal will formally start with the Chakchudaan in the statues of Goddess Durga. The idol makers are working day and night to complete the Maa Durga idols for this occasion. In their case, on the day of Mahalaya, the process of coloring in the eyes of Maa Durga statue has to be started.
However, preparations for Durga Puja begin in West Bengal 2 months before, but at the time of the arrival of the Pitripaksha, preparation goes on full swing. Coming to the Mahalaya, durga puja preparation reaches to its peak. The markets are decorated like a bride. Everyone is filled with excitement. Pooja pandals are being made in many special ways. On the first day, the color is painted on the Maa Durga statue and like this every day is very special day. This cycle continues till the Navami. But a week before the start of Navratri, the statue of Goddess Durga is ready, but her eyes is pending. On the day of Mahalaya, the eyes of Mata Durga are prepared and the process of coloring in their eyes is completed.
Although there are tourists visiting the area for a whole year, but their number is increased to see the special Durga Pooja festival here. Railway also operates special trains for this grand festival. Every flight that comes to Bagdogra is filled with pilgrims. In truth it is the festival of bliss. During Durga Puja, forgetting the caste and crossing the age limits, everyone is being seen in the festive mood and enjoying the decorations of puja pandals with attractive well decorated Maa durga idols. Elder, Your, Children and Ladies are seen touring the puja pandals. Leaving behind all sorrows, stress, everyone gathers to worship maa Durga.

On this day devotees goes to river banks for offering Tarpan to their beloved ones.
